No Extra Plugin Needed: What Utopia’s “AI Studio” Feature Can Do

Utopia ships with a built-in AI assistant called AI Studio, and you don’t need to install a separate plugin to use it.

Beyond helping with writing, it can generate meta descriptions in bulk, create image ALT text automatically, and even let readers ask questions about a post directly on the page. Everything is configured from one settings screen inside the WordPress admin.

A bring-your-own-key model, so you stay in control of your data

AI Studio works with any OpenAI-compatible API, including Groq, OpenRouter, Azure, or a locally hosted model. You choose the provider and enter your own API key.

That key is stored only on your own site. It is never sent to Utopia’s servers.

Because you pick the provider yourself, you also control which service handles your content and how much you spend on it. That’s a meaningful difference from theme features that lock you into one external service.

Writing support right inside the block editor

Once AI Studio is turned on, a dedicated panel appears in the block editor. You can call on AI assistance while drafting a post, without switching to another tool or tab.

That keeps the whole process, from first draft to publish, inside a single screen.

Bulk meta description generation

Meta descriptions matter for SEO, and AI Studio can generate them in bulk across posts, pages, and landing pages.

You can filter the list down to items that don’t have a meta description yet, review each AI-generated suggestion, and apply only the ones you approve. Nothing gets published automatically without a human checking it first.

Automatic ALT text for images

AI Studio can also generate ALT text using a vision-capable model, which matters both for accessibility and for SEO.

You can run it in bulk from the media library, or generate ALT text for a single image on the spot using the “Generate ALT with AI” option. There’s also a setting that fills in ALT text automatically whenever an image is uploaded without one, which helps sites that tend to forget this step.

Let readers ask the article a question

Every post can display a floating “Ask AI” button that lets readers ask questions about that specific article and get an answer on the spot.

It runs on your API key and includes rate limiting, so it’s built with cost control in mind rather than leaving usage open-ended.

For sites that want to give readers a quick way to get clarification without emailing support, this is a useful option to have available.

Brand Voice keeps the tone consistent

AI Studio includes a Brand Voice section where you can set a tone (friendly, formal, casual, professional, witty), how the content addresses readers, notes about your target audience, banned words, and phrases you’d like used more often.

These settings apply everywhere AI Studio generates text: meta descriptions, TL;DR summaries, ALT text, and Ask AI answers. It’s a practical way to keep writing consistent across a whole site, even when different people are publishing.

TL;DR summaries, with an offline fallback

You can display a TL;DR summary above the body of a post. If a saved TL;DR isn’t available, Utopia can fall back to an offline, extractive summary generated directly from the post content, without calling the API at all.

That means the summary feature still works even before you’ve configured an AI provider.

Getting started

To turn AI Studio on, open the Utopia menu in your WordPress admin and go to AI Studio, then enter the API key for the provider you want to use.
