Most WordPress membership sites rely on a dedicated plugin like MemberPress or Restrict Content Pro to gate content behind a login.
Utopia ships with that capability built in. Turn on one setting in the theme’s Membership panel, and you can mark any post or page as members-only — no extra plugin required.
It’s a good fit for sites that mix public pages with content meant for a smaller group: course materials, columns for paying subscribers, or internal resources shared with clients.
Turning it on: the Membership settings screen
Inside the Utopia dashboard, the Membership settings page starts with a single toggle to enable the access-restriction feature.
Once it’s on, every post and page editor gains a new “Access Restriction” panel in the sidebar.
Checking “Members only” is all it takes to lock that page down.
You get to choose what happens when a logged-out visitor lands on a restricted page.
The recommended option redirects them to the login page.
The alternative, teaser mode, keeps the same URL and shows only the opening portion of the content before a lock screen takes over — and you can set exactly how many words appear before the lock, along with the message shown on the lock screen itself.
You can also point the settings at custom login and registration page URLs; leave those fields blank and Utopia falls back to WordPress’s default login page, so you can test the feature before building anything extra.
Gating part of an article, not the whole page
The “Members only” checkbox works at the page level, but you don’t have to lock an entire post.
Wrap any section in the
[utopia_members_only][/utopia_members_only]shortcode to keep the intro open to everyone while restricting the rest — the details, the download link, whatever you want to reserve for members.
A separate
[utopia_login_form]shortcode drops a login form anywhere you place it.
Anyone who registers is automatically assigned the “Member” role and gets access to the gated content.
Where this fits
This setup makes sense for sites that need both open and members-only sections in one place: a landing page for an online course, a subscriber-only column, or a resource page shared only with partners or clients.
Combined with Utopia’s Corporate, Portal, or Blog site types, you can run a members-only section alongside an otherwise public corporate site or media outlet without adding another plugin to the stack.
Worth noting: this is an access-restriction feature — it toggles what a logged-in visitor can see — not a full billing or subscription system.
It’s best suited to gating free member perks or internal and partner content rather than running paid memberships end to end.
